Wow, a free movie!

So check it out. As some of you may recall, once upon a time I wrote and directed a little horror movie called Ludlow. It was on DVD for a while, but now it is out of print. But DVDs are so last century, amirite? Now you can just download the movie! Hooray. And in hooray-ier news, you can download it and pay what you want! If you want to pay nothing, pay nothing. If you want to pay a dollar, pay a dollar. If you want to pay nothing now and a dollar later, pay nothing now and a dollar later. If you want to pay a dollar now and ten dollars later...oh man, according to my science calculator, the possibilities are endless. Here's the link to download it at Gumroad, yay! And here's the teaser trailer.

I don't know if it's any good, but maybe it's not terrible for being shot in like two days with a crew of one and a budget of about $200. And it's free, so what's the harm? At the least, you'll probably like the terrific soundtrack courtesy of James M. Barry. If you want to read a couple of reviews and check out some making of blog posts I wrote, here you go. Movies, amirite?

it's WEDNESDAY!

Now, before you get all excited because of those capital letters- which would seem to indicate something special about Wednesday- please note that there's really nothing to get excited about today beyond the fact that it's Chuck Woolery's birthday.

Sorry I've been an absentee mom recently...there just hasn't been much horror in my life lately. Well, except for my hair, which is neither bouncin' nor behavin'. (rimshot) Anyway, I know you'd like to think that while I'm not here typing away furiously, I'm simply staring off into space and withering away, like Christopher Reeve at the end of Somewhere in Time. I'm sorry to say this is only mostly the case, for sometimes I do do things. Observe!

- I have been playing Dragon Age II like nobody's business! That's right, nobody's business...and yet I decided to write about it anyway over at Jill Sandwich, thereby making it everybody's business.

WHAT.

- If you are in Canada (yes, any part of Canada), then you can see Ludlow on the big screen this Friday night! It's showing as part of the Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto, and it's also been nominated in the Best Debut Feature and Best Experimental categories. I couldn't be more thrilled. What an honor! Go check it out if you can...and if you're feeling particularly bold, please consider clicking "like" on Ludlow's Facebook page. I realize that I very rarely click like on anything on Facebook, so if you're thinking that this is a time for cyber retribution, I understand. It saddens me, however, that there are, like pages on Facebook for pickles and said pickles received more interest than my film.

Mind you, I do realize that some pickles are really fucking cool. Like this one, that yodels.

- This woman be making comics. Like, a real ongoing, epic thing. It's called RPG and as you can safely assume from that title, it's all fantasy nerdery with, like, swords and monsters and quests and shit. It's still a newborn, but it updates on Mondays and Wednesdays, and you can check it out at www.rpgcomic.com.

- Next week I'm seeing Scream 4, and I will faithfully report on it when the PR people tell me I can. By the way, I refuse to call it Scre4m, except for when I did it right there when pointing out that I won't do it.

- I fear that Cathy's Curse is taking on Rumplestiltskin-sized & -shaped real estate in my brain. That is to say, it's terrible, but I find the words "It's the best thing ever!" coming out of my mouth and I desperately want to watch it and I kind of can't stop thinking about it. Oh, such powers Cathy wields!

Now if you'll excuse me, I have some walls that need some starin' thrown their way.

24 grate songs

I'd explain the post title, but it's a long story. Okay: when I was a wee-ish bonnie lass, someone gave a friend of mine a mix tape labeled "24 grate songs".

Wow, I guess that story wasn't long at all. Anyway, the point is:

From March 27 - April 2, Film Clubber and super guy Bryce Wilson is running Raimifest at his site, Things That Don't Suck. A week in the horr-o-blog-o-phere-o? Yes, please. I have no idea what I'll do, but I'mma do sumpin'!

I frickin' love Drag Me to Hell.

Speaking of the Final Girl Film Club, Monday is the day! No wait, Tuesday is the day. So, watch Frozen, write something up, and email your link to me. Film Club Day is the one day a month where the whole entire Internet (meaning: five people) comes together in harmonious harmony. Don't miss out on the glory!

In an effort to "get the word out" to people who have probably already heard the damn word 20,000 times, I created a Faceplace page for Ludlow. If you are on the Faceplace and you "like" the page, it will become your friend and you will be updated with all sorts of fascinating Ludlow information, like when there's a release date for the forthcoming Ludlow action figure line. Get in the know! Like the page!

I had the distinct honor of being interviewed by Michael Varrati for Peaches Christ's website. If you want to read it and you have eyes, then click here to do it!

It's about time!

About GD time, I say!

It took 'em long enough to get here, but Ludlow has now officially moved from "pre-order" to just plain ol' "order". Aw, it's so available and grown up now. They start shipping this week! WOO!

fuh-ryeday

Over at Senceless Pie, Meg Wood done went and posted a review of Ludlow. I tells ya, once this movie gets out there (THE DVDs ARE BEING MADE WOO), I'm going to have to stop reading reviews, should any more pop up. It's way too nerve-wracking; so much so that I feel like taking to my fainting couch before I click links to read what people have to say about it. Not that I can't take (or don't expect) criticism...it's just...it makes me feel all weird. Even the good reviews. Yes, "weird"- that describes it perfectly and profoundly.

If you want to pre-order a copy of Ludlow, you can do so! Look over there to the right- LOOK OVER THERE I SAY- and click on the appropriate Paypal links.

Also, forget you not! Monday is Film Club Day, so getcher Sugar Hill on!

getcher fresh, hot LUDLOW here!

Okay, y'all. After some awesome feedback the other day, I have made a decision, and that decision is thus: Ludlow is now available for pre-order. How "pre" is that pre-order? Well, as soon as I raise enough pre-order dough, I'm getting a mess of these puppies printed up (by "puppies" I mean "DVDs"), and then I'll mail them out. I'm thinking this should take a couple of weeks...three, maybe?

No waiting for the magic of distribution. No making my computer cry by burning...umm...tens and tens of copies. Fancy shrink-wrappedness and all that.

The price is but mere! MERE I SAY! If you're in the US (and why aren't you??), it's $11 which includes shipping. If you're not in the US, then it's $14 including shipping. That's a pretty good deal, right?

So! What do you get? A DVD, duh. The DVD features the movie (duh), a commentary track for said movie with me and Shannon Lark (warning: informative, but goofy), and 10-minute (or so) interview with Shannon Lark. Oh, and you get good karma for supporting indie horror! And you also get the opportunity to shower me with flames if you hate it.

There you go. Let's do this shit.

Well, well...

...what have we here?

First of all, you get +50 nerd points if you said "Well, well...what have we here?" in Morrigan's voice. You get +50 cool/have a life points if you've no idea what I'm talking about.

Second of all, what we have here is this:

...and this:

...and this:

End Credits (from "Ludlow") by James Barry

My pal Andrew of Gonzoriffic done went and mastered me up a DVD, and I done went and made a cover, and the awesome James Barry done went and got hisself a music blog where you can hear more selections from Ludlow as well as other tasty tidbits of his work.

So now what? Do I wait forever on the chance that a distributor will pick this up? Do I wait to save up the scratch to get a whole bunch of them printed and sell them directly? Do I put it out through Amazon's print-on-demand service and let them take about 50%? Do I say fuck it and keep the whole Ludlow extreme D.I.Y. spirit going and sell DVD-R copies (with, you know, a real DVD case and insert and all, but still- DVD-R)? Effing decisions. What do you think, oh Internet? What would you do if you were me? What would you want as a consumer? Can you believe I had so many beans for lunch?

WARNING: talk of me ahead

Boy oh boy, friends, it's tough out here in cyber-land. If you listen to The Scare-ening at all then you know that lately I've been railing against the hype machines that seem to be in perpetual motion all over the internet, particularly on Facespace. Basically, my argument boils down to this: yes, indie creative types (filmmakers, artists, writers, clog dancers, Colonel Sanders impersonators) must put the word out about their work or there's a good chance no one will find it. One must pimp oneself and then hope others will join in the fight...however! It's okay to talk about something- or even someone- else from time to time. If someone relentlessly pushes their product on me, updating their status every couple hours to market themselves without taking a fucking breath, then I tune 'em right out and their efforts prove to be counterproductive, at least as far as I'm concerned.

That's all fine and good, but then when I've got stuff to talk about...well, it becomes tricky. I can't not talk about things, because otherwise "there's a good chance no one will find it"; however, I'm aware of the bitching I do and so there's also a chance I may be acting hypocritical.

Then I say to myself, "This is your website and you can write whatever you want, so quit thinking about it all so much, provide the links you want to provide, then fuck off and write some damn reviews or something." Okay, self, sheesh. You don't have to be so hostile.

There is an actual review of Ludlow over at Slammed & Damned. It feels weird to say that- you know, that someone is watching my movie and writing about it- but I suppose that it simply means that after all this time and all the behind-the-scenes stuff and what have you...it's really real. For those who have shown interest in it, first of all, THANK YOU. Second, the DVD is being assembled. It'll have a commentary track and a brief interview with Shannon Lark. I'll update with information on availability as it...becomes...available.

Mike Snoonian of All Things Horror has gone and declared Taste of Flesh, Taste of Fear an "essential horror short film for your collection"! I am duly, DULY honored. If you want to check out the movie that has, as Mike puts it, an "epic one car pileup", well, look to your right. I mean on the computer screen. There's ordering info over yonder! Be the envy of...well, someone somewhere, to be sure.

If you live in the Boston-ish area, you should be psyched: on Wednesday, September 1, All Things Horror is once again hosting their movie night at the Somerville Theater. Taste of Flesh, Taste of Fear is showing that night alongside the much-hyped Dead Hooker in a Trunk, Rubber Doll Whore (no idea about that one), and Liz Adams' Side Effect, which alone is worth more than the ticket price. Seriously, go see Side Effect if you can. Visit All Things Horror for tickets and all that...sure, it says Taste the Fear- Taste the Flesh, but I'm pretty sure they're talking about my movie and not some sort of weird energy snack.

so i made a movie: LUDLOW, part eight

Catch up on all the previous installments of So I Made A Movie: LUDLOW right here...presented to you in GLORIOUS DETAIL!

Y'all, it's done. DONE. DONNNNNNNE! Way too many moons later, Ludlow is done.

What happened since we last spoke of this a zillion light-years ago? You know, when I left off with my backyard screening of the first cut? Well, here's what happened:

Ludlow ended up with a run time that made it too short to be a feature and too long to be a short. Cutting out, oh, say 40 minutes wasn't an option...so I decided to add to it. But! How to do this without the result feeling blatantly padded?

I had some at least one problem: there are three characters, and I wasn't about to introduce anyone new. Bringing back two of those three characters for more scenes would not have been wise. That just left...a montage set to peppy upbeat music, wherein Krista (Shannon Lark) either 1) trains for a fight or 2) trains for a big dance production. Montage it was.

I kid. There's no montage. What there is, however, is a brand-new scene that is incredibly depressing and adds to the story rather nicely (if I'm allowed to say so). In fact, I think Ludlow 2.0 is better with the new scene than without, and the deliberate padding-osity was avoided. You know what that calls for- a robust round of our friend Briefcase Woman!

Now, you may recall a little fundraising drive I ran in order to...wait for it...raise funds so I could afford to transform the caterpillar Ludlow into the beautiful swan that is Ludlow 2.0- yes, the transformation is that remarkable! Let me say this about the response to the fundraiser: you guys are fucking awesome. Seriously. Every time you turn around today, someone is starting a Kickstarter project or holding out their hand. Man, I got my request out of the way just in time!

Thanks to the generosity of You Awesome People, I was able to cover all expenses. It was rad to do so, so thank you.

Mind you, as this was Ludlow, Shannon and I ran into some problems during the shoot. The largest being that the room we originally shot in was not available- not because it was taken by other guests, but because the air conditioner was broken. It just...figured. We got a room that had basically the same layout, with some minor differences. I tried to shoot in such a way that the change won't be noticeable. Otherwise, the most depressing scene ever was over very quickly and went without a hitch- even our FX! Yes, FX. Scintillating. We were done in a mere couple of hours- so un-Ludlow-y- and that was that.

We shot some some more footage for the new scene in Sherman Oaks, which was strange. I mean, it was fine, but it was a reminder that these characters had...have...whatever...a life before and outside of that weird, shitty motel in the desert. It kind of didn't seem right to see Krista, for example, anywhere but Room 8. Hard to explain and silly, maybe, but there you go.

Anyway, I edited the new footage in and did a bunch of trimmin elsewhere.

And then the movie sat around in the magical negative zone known as "my computer" for several months. Months??! Damn. I have no concept of time.

And then the composer, James Barry, redid the score. He created music for some scenes that previously had none, and dudes- it's so much better now. So much. I can't even tell you. Or maybe I just did. Get off my back!

And then it was done. It's done. It's still in the Negative Computer Zone, really, but it's done. There's no more to do except get it in front of eyeballs that are not my own.

How do I do that? I have no idea. Someone tell me!
